    Hélène Lyon

Distinguished Engineer & CTO Analytics System z Software, IBM

On October 10, It was great to spend some time with vICTory, your customers and the 4 young mainframers.
I have been impressed by the project they delivered after just 2 months.
The teaming between 2 system programmers and 2 application developers allowed them to answer a real customer oriented scenario by learning to solve some z/OS and RACF problems, learning CICS programming, DB2 databases design! Quite impressive!
I hope they understand that we dramatically need their skills, their energy, their new way of thinking and their enthusiasm.

    Ludwig Van den bergh

Flash Technical Sales Manager, STG Europe, IBM

This short note, just to tell how impressed I was to see to what level vICTory brings, their new graduates in such a short time frame.
It was for me the first time, I participated to the case study presentation the young grads prepared.
Besides the fact that I was impressed by their presentation skills, I was even more impressed in what they learned in 7 weeks and what they were capable to do in only one week. When looking back to my long mainframe career, it took me a lot more to reach that level.
I discussed with all grads and was surprised they could talk about all this essential for MF programmers or MF Systems Admins.
Congratulations to the vICTory team - I can imagine this is based on 2 imperatives:
    1. Selecting the right people who are hungry to learn and to step in a MF career
    2. Having a very good education team in house
I am sure the clients to where they go ( and who were present ) were very delighted to get these talents on board.

    Wilfried Van Hecke

    Certified IT Specialist, IBM

As an introduction, manager Eddy Vos presented the selection process for the candidates. It was not explained what criteria precisely were considered to be important. The four candidates all had university degrees, two of them were teachers, the other two had a degree that was related to IT.
The graduates could present their final project on that day. One of the mentors presented the project which was meaningfully called “24 Hours of vICTory. (This referred to the “24 Hours of Le Mans) The programming task was to hold record of the individual participants (check in), order of starters, different days and time of the individual races, the lap times and finally the results and check out.
The project was divided as follows:
Analysis of the project: e.g. joint analysis of the task, discussion and analysis with customer (both of were of course vICTory employees),….
Workload (they had only one week of time for the realization including unexpected mainframe access) and internal distribution of tasks comprising following tasks related to the system set up:

    • z/OS Datasets, RACF definitions, CICS admin setup, Problem statement
    • Allocation and definitions of DB2 Databases, Tables and Views
    • Presentation Logic, (native BMS, Communication to Business logic should use Channel/Containers)
    • Business logic (SQL: Select, Modify)
    • Documentation of the project
    • Debriefing (including discussion on how the performance could be upgraded)
Several customer managers (large customers) and IBM personnel from France, Belgium and Germany were present at the presentation.
Summarized it can be said that it was an exciting presentation, to which I have to say: I take my hat off to the fact that there are so many trainees that show interest in System-Z and z/OS and the education given by vICTory goes exactly in the right direction. It offers important foundations for the young people on their way towards their further development. I wish all the best to the four graduates.
I was enthusiastic about the presentation.

    Christine Hensel

    Director Technical Services Europe, Stonebranch

At Stonebranch, we strive to simplify IT workload automation by transforming the management of complex business processes with a single click of a button.
When it was time to hire an experienced and qualified support specialist, we found it wasn't nearly as simple.
I reached out to vICTory-de for help in finding the ideal candidate, and vICTory-de quickly arranged for me to meet three qualified candidates.
We hired one gentleman on contract, and after four months brought him on board as a permanent full-time Stonebranch employee.
Working with vICTory-de was simple. Our dedicated relationship manager, Eddy Vos, was friendly, open and flexible.
I would recommend vICTory-de to others.

    P&V Insurances

For several years we have a number of young people working within our IT department through vICTory-be.

In line with their standard education they have had a specific Mainframe Academy training for several months, which was organized by vICTory-be.
After such an additional training, candidates (mostly graduates) answer much better to the real needs of the business world.
In advance, there is the possibility to make a selection of potential candidates, which highly increases the chances of a successful integration within a company. The moment the consultants start, they are assigned an internal coach who can guide and train them in specific areas during one year.
Currently we have 5 Mainframe Junior profiles and 2 Java Junior profiles within our IT department. Meanwhile they have been in our department for 2 years and are well integrated.

A strong asset of this formula is that the consultants may be employed eventually within the company, if both consultant and business interact with each other optimally. The conditions on this subject were clearly established in advance with vICTory-be. This way, the company has the ability to realize a permanent rejuvenation among its employees and this within technologies (Mainframe), which some colleges and universities describe it as “old-fashioned and “surpassed.
However, the industry knows very well that these technologies experienced the necessary changes and will be used widely for many decades within the most critical business processes of large companies, and are therefore totally indispensable.

    Thomas Cook

Mainframes are definitely not out of this world, far from it, in fact!
The fact is that many computer scientists show no interest in mainframe development, which makes it difficult for companies to find the appropriate mainframe resources.
Thomas Cook has found a clever solution at MeTech.
MeTech is looking for young people who are interested in mainframe technology, screening these people on knowledge and motivation and providing a thorough education.
Today Thomas Cook has 6 young people from MeTech, some for already 2,5 years. I am pleasantly surprised by their effort and motivation. Despite the fact that these applications are complex,
which are very strategic for Thomas Cook in Belgium, Netherlands and France; have they integrated in such a way that they can take up most of the tasks independently. They remain eager to learn, due to the fact that in development for a Tour Operator, someone is always a challenge. They significantly contribute in keeping a reservation system stable and efficient 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
They are proud that every year millions of people book their holidays through the software, of which they have a great contribution.

    Seppe V.M.

    vICTory Academy

September 11th 2006, 5 years after the terrorist attacks in the United States, they started to plot a small attack here in Leuven. Later, this attack would be claimed by vICTory-be and Abis.

They attempted to bring eight youngsters, fresh from school, to learn everything about 'The Mainframe'. There went our student life and our holiday. Each day the same routine; wake up early, pay attention, make exercises, go home and sleep. All of a sudden, we found ourselves in a 9 to 5 schedule. You, as a reader, probably understand that I perceived this as an attack on myself!

Two months it would last. Two months looking at a screen ... and why ? Didn't we study enough yet ? Didn't we learn everything at school to start a job ? Apparently not ! From the first day, we were immersed in the courses. We started with the age-old COBOL, the consulting of DB/2 and the writing of online applications with CICS . then telling JES2 what to do with all those data. We also learned about the more theoretical aspects. We studied the basics of the operating system MVS, the Websphere environment, schedule tasks with CA-7...

Our group had a blast. We all tried to survive those weeks by making jokes and laughing a lot. In general, it was much more relaxed than our familiar school environment. For me personally, it was a good transition between school and a "real" job.

Spontaneously, at 10.30 AM, our stomach started gasping for a biscuit or a piece of cake. There sure was enough food . I guess a good mainframe guy needs a belly and a beard. At noon we had a choice between a wide variety of sandwiches like Theo, Rita, Denise, Luna, . or a warm meal. Yes, we were spoilt.

But we were also hard workers. We tried to proof this the last week during the "case study". In this case study, the teachers tried to establish a real-time environment. Several times, we encountered problems that were provoked by our teachers. But this didn't stop us from finishing our project in time and presenting it before the extreme severe jury.

After liters of coffee, kilo's of cake, way to much "finally's" and a good toast, we finished our 2 month project. We were crammed to enter the business world.

To all the people who thought that the mainframe is death, I would like to say: Attention, times are changing!
